The parliamentary
elections in the Republic of Azerbaijan in 1995
On 12 November 1995, Azerbaijan held its first parliamentary
election (elections to the Milli Majlis) since regaining
independence 3.556.277 or 86,05 percent of 4.132.600
citizens included in voter lists participated in the
elections. 20 single mandate constituencies needed run-off
elections and they were conducted on 26 November. Partial
elections were held in 15 constituencies on 4 February
1996. Finally elections to the Milli Majlis were completed
by run-off election in one constituency on I 8 February.
Totally 124 members were elected 10 the Milli Majlis.
99 of them were elected in single mandate constituencies
and 25 by list of political parties in nation-wide constituency.
8 political parties took part in the elections. The
New Azerbaijan Party won 19 seats and the Azerbaijan
National Independence Party and the Azerbaijan Popular
Front Party each won 3 seats in the Mi1li Majlis of
the country.
Generally 69 members (55,65 percent) represent political
parties functioning in the country, in the Mi1li Majlis
of the Republic of Azerbaijan. 55 Mi1li Majlis members
are non-partisan.
The last referendum on 12 November 1995
The last referendum conducted on 12 November 1995 in
the country was on adoption of the Constitution of the
Republic of Azerbaijan. While summarizing results of
the referendum it was found out that the 3.556.277 or
86,05 percent of 4.132 600 citizens included m voter
lists took part in the referendum and 91,9 percent of
them voted for adopting of the Constitution and 6,63
percent voted against.
